We have chosen Toyota Land Cruisers to be the backbone of our trip. We debated the pros and cons of Land Cruisers versus Land Rover but decided Land Cruisers suited our age.
We spotted a 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser GX 80 when browsing the web and it was just what we wanted.
Madala
We bought the Land Cruiser from Steyn Vivier, a farmer in the Free State, a wonderful chap who has become our technical adviser. Steyn named the vehicle "Madala" which means “old man” in Xhosa and in the African culture signifies vision, wisdom and good judgment. We liked the name and what it stands for. Madala is an uncomplicated, strong, reliable and very comfortable die hard 4x4.
We collected the second Land Cruiser from Steyn Vivier in Bloemfontein on Thursday 18th December 2008. We arrived back in Cape Town in the early hours of Friday morning having had a trouble free journey. We averaged 6.76 km/litre or 14.88 litres/100km which is the same as Madala.
Morena
We have called the vehicle "Morena" which means "Big Guy" in Xhosa. Morena still has to have some accessories fitted for the journey but the condition is good and our Technical Advisor Steyn has done us proud by providing us with two good Toyota Land Cruisers. They are both GX 80s and fitted with the notoriously reliable Toyota 4.2 diesel engine.
